The first Bishop of New France faced the challenge of a 17th century diocese that spanned most of what is now known as Canada, much of upper New England and all the Mississippi Valley, extending even to the Rocky Mountains. He is admired for his efforts to defend the Indigenous Peoples and foster education. He was committed to the care of the poor and evangelization, and dedicated himself to pastoral work through prayer and penance. In 2014, Pope Francis proclaimed François de Laval a Saint of the Universal Church. In 2016, the Canadian episcopate unanimously declared him patron of the Bishops of Canada.
